When it comes to agricultural storage, many operators make the mistake of assuming "a tank is a tank." If it can hold 5,000 gallons of water, it should be able to hold 5,000 gallons of 28% Nitrogen, right?
Not exactly.
Liquid fertilizer is significantly denser and heavier than water. While a standard water tank might hold up for a few months, the constant load of heavy liquids will eventually cause structural fatigue, bowing, and failure. If you are storing liquid fertilizer, understanding Specific Gravity (SG) isn't just a technical detail—it’s a requirement for site safety and protecting your investment.

A large blue rotomolded plastic storage tank sits on a concrete pad in a farmyard. Behind it are agricultural implements and two tractors, with a red barn and silo in the background. The scene represents typical on-farm liquid storage applications such as water, fertilizer, or chemical containment in rural agricultural environments.
Tank ratings are built around the concept of Specific Gravity. In the simplest terms, SG is the ratio of the density of a substance to the density of water.
Water has an SG of 1.0. If a liquid has an SG of 1.32, it is 32% heavier than water. When you fill an atmospheric tank with a high-SG liquid, that extra weight creates a massive outward load against the tank walls, especially at the base.
Here is how common fertilizers stack up:
Using a tank rated only for water (1.0 SG) to store 10-34-0 is a risky move. The continuous stress on the polyethylene will lead to "creep"—a permanent deformation of the plastic—shortening the lifespan of your equipment significantly.
At Percheron Plastic, our fertilizer-grade tanks are engineered specifically to handle the "heavy lifting" of agricultural chemicals. They differ from standard tanks in three key ways:
When selecting a tank for your operation, you need to match your heaviest liquid to the tank’s SG rating. We recommend two of our most popular vertical storage solutions for bulk liquid fertilizer.

A rotomolded vertical storage tank installed on a reinforced concrete pad in an agricultural setting, positioned adjacent to active farm equipment. The installation demonstrates proper site preparation and support for liquid storage applications where load, stability, and long-term performance are critical.
This tank is a staple for medium-sized operations and nurse tank setups.
For those receiving bulk deliveries or managing large-scale acreage, the V-19003 offers the volume you need with the structural integrity required for long-term storage.
A tank failure is more than just a lost piece of equipment. It represents thousands of dollars in lost product, potential environmental fines, and a massive cleanup headache.
If you are storing 28% nitrogen or heavier fertilizers, "good enough" isn't good enough. You need a tank rated for the weight. Investing in a higher SG rating today means you won't be replacing a deformed or failed tank tomorrow.
Whether you need storage for the farm, the job site, or emergency preparedness, we have the plastic tanks built to stand up to the heaviest liquids. Get in touch and we'll help you find your tank.
